Getting around the world/map

Hi All!

Can anyone give some general ideas on where to go to see places other than Midgaard and the immediate surroundings? I know there are tons of interesting areas that all this equipment originated in, but I don't have 3 hours straight to spend wandering aimlessly out of the city gates to find it - only to have to recall and rent as soon as I stumble onto something because it's time for work (and have no idea how I got there)

I finally tried just that - took subway to Skara, went in random direction and saw some stuff - an ocean, a deserted island with a beach that loops you back to it, and then a low-level ship full of sailors, and then a town were I promptly DT'ed. Some kind hearted souls online got me going again with a weapon equal to what I lost and some good EQ - but I still want to see where all this equipment COMEs from. Know what I mean?

PS: I've had plenty of high level players take me on EXP runs to strange places - but that is a blur of movement/assist/heal - GREAT for getting up to a level that can take 3 steps outside the gates without immediate death, but not much for sightseeing

Anyway - any general guidelines? (far west of the city, look for this area then turn north, that sort of thing) And how do you guys remember these places and get back there quickly - mapping programs of some kind or just good notes and lots of "doing"?

There's a map on www.jedimud.com (from Ching?) that shows kind of the general lay out of the world. Here's some things I used to learn/relearn the world:

1) help areas (shows area and their general location and difficulty). There are also help files for maps of each hometown.

2) In the old days I mapped things out on graph paper. I bought a license for zmud many many years ago and used that to help with building and now I've upgraded to CMud and I use the map in there. I know a lot of the uber players can simply keep the layout in their head but my mind doesn't work that way so I need something to refer to. That's why I take a lot of notes. There are some other free mappers out there but I don't have much experience with them. It took me the better part of a year of playing but I have a map now that has all but maybe 5 or 6 of the hardest areas in it and has almost all of the known DTs marked.

3) When learning an area I always use the exits command as well as look in all the directions in each room. I set up an alias for checking the exits in every direction. There isn' t a single DT in the game that isn't well marked if you're reading the exits and descriptions. I highly suggest having infravision on as well just in case you're in dark areas.

4) If you read the Quests forum there are some DT quests that list all the DTs that existed at that time. I kept that list very close at hand when exploring.

5) Use gossip to ask for tips on the area. I got lots of great pointers from people about things to avoid or watch out for which saved my hide many, many times. They were also kind enough to point out which items to look for and where they loaded. Since so many of the decent items don't load 100% of the time this is very difficult to learn without some outside help.

6) Search for Dank's post of paths/directions and/or do a google search for Jedimud directions. There's a page out there with directions to key points all over the world that serves well as a starting point to do some exploring.

7) If you have a client that supports it, log everything. If you log some of those crazy runs, you can go back through them later to rough out a map and figure out where you were or re-explore on your own.

That's probably a lot more info than you're looking for but those things have served me well in the last 14 or so months. Feel free to ask me questions if you have them. I'm always willing to pass on the information that was shared with me.
