so, when you look at some of the quest items (in game and quest only) you can find a few cute little 'devices'....recall, fountains, atms....what else do you guys think would make some interesting quest items?

Well we have portable recalls, group recalls, banks and fountains... who not an Easy Bake Oven... or keeping more in theme with the magic and technology in our medieval mud... how about a Froboz Inc food replicator?
Though I would LOVE to see a set of devices that can set a player's alignment to 1000, -1000 or 0 and would pay or fight dearly for one!

More trumps. Shouldn't there be at least 13 different cards?

okay here are some new device ideas that wouldn't require a coder:

How about a device that gives you an extra roll on your level gains (random if in inventory). A gating device would absolutely ROCK btw.... Great artifact type item. How about a device that acts as a skeleton key! Or maybe a device that has limited charges to reset a zone (powerful). I think a device that doesn't allow you to enter DT's would be cool (would give the holder a !MOB flag or something so they couldn't enter). You could call it the 'Get out of Jail Free card'.

well, all of those except the gate device would require a coder for sure.....the gate device may be possible, but highly unlikly to ever be approved.
as far as a pet dispenser.....no....i cant imagine in what way someone would find to abuse that!

Bah! It's a couple of if/then statements looping back to stuff thats already written. Not harder than that for sure. For instance:
If Dank's post > 300, then Dank account = closed!

Easily fixed actually. Just create a brand new type of pet for the dispenser and give it immune_all_element 100%, reflect backstab 100%, reflect_drain 100%, reflect_mana_channel 100%. Congratz, cheese proof pets. Oh and 5 hp just to keep them "balanced".
I still think the alignment devices would be the best sellers, short of actually awarding trump cards for the first time in half a decade. Even moreso if they're wearable pieces of worthwhile gear.

Ahhhh, something that hasn't been done is an !evil item wearable by EVIL and a !good item wearable by good. Would be cool if something provided both but was neutral only or something crazy like that. There NEEDS to be more reasons for people to go neutral. The whole 5mregen headwear in Pyramid just isn't cutting it. Heck, since we are talking about coding, make a PFN item too.

Well... Wrath of Allah is neutral only. Takes forever to use one but it loads only a handful of steps from NT Inn and with a good rate.
Thunderstone of Ils... 1dam, easy to load neckwear thats neutral only. Heck I've got a pair on my Anstruth bard.
Course if we had a PFN item, it'd be something assinine like -150 hp/mana, ml30 and an artifact or perma_plague and then the whole of DOOM and the Pagoda would be coded to be overwhelming neutral from top to bottom.

Yup all good examples... just very few of them. Neutral gear tends to be pretty solid and even a step up in quite a few cases. Its just a massive pain in the ass to stay neutral unless you're the group leader, have a neutral knowledgeable group leader or solo. I know this from having run a neutral just-about-everything short of A/P/J.

Given how much in-game eq is still !neutral, those few pieces alone aren't worth it at least to me. The ramses mask is pretty nice but the restrictions on it are insane and end up making it neutral m/c only. The vulcan is a great weapon, I've used one since my early days but its outclassed now and most people would have trouble even wielding one. Ils are nice but no reason to go neutral. Bfly... awesome dice, so-so affects... mostly gets used for sac nowadays. The wrath is alright, ml is horrid on it though. Give me a good ol' staff of many parts anyday or a white onyx staff if I want mana.
Given how what few neutral-only items there are, they're scattered across the classes and concentrated more in the weaponry. Maybe if we had a lot more neutral-only gear it might be a reason for more people to walk that fine line.

bah! dank was neutral for 12 years and could get to 35 dam bonus and -200 ac and 25 wis and 150 MR and the rest. if we had a coder, we could force a class to stay neu, like we do the jedi/paladin/apal classes. a new class... tourist. i personally loved the tourist in HACK, and i think i won the game with it once. tough class to win HACK with.

No one ever said there was nothing wrong with running neutral, most people just can't be bothered for what few items are neutral only.
As I already said, could just make a device to set alignments. It can't be very difficult to produce and it probably wouldn't need an official coder to create one, just someone familiar with devices.

Wooooooo! HackC is one of my all time favorites!! I preferred using the valk. class and wielding a Mjollnir while hiding behind my +5 Black Dragonscale Armor. I won it multiple times as a Monk, but winning with a Tourist is quite the accomplishment! What do you do once you run out of camera flashes and food rations!!!

Well you can scroll up and read what ideas people already gave you. Course any of those will automatically be slapped with a CIMP-only flag as a quest prize and remain lost to the db for a few years. An inner gateway device would be way too powerful, even with !gate rooms in a lot of major areas. Probably end up on clerics using it to gate the back of the Underworld or on bards in place of the trump cards that are never awarded anymore. Then again, this wouldn't be either. A food device wouldn't make it out of the god complex either. Despite classes being able to create food freely, constant food machines placed around the game during fun times and food being dirt cheap... some people are just opposed to the idea. two coppers dropped from a really high building

Bah! It's a couple of if/then statements looping back to stuff thats already written. Not harder than that for sure. For instance: If Dank's post > 300, then Dank account = closed! G. Well there are some significant things to note in making this statement. 1) If/Then no longer exists in C. It's If/Else. The "then" part simply falls in between the brackets. 2) A person would need to know what an If/Else statement does in order to use it. 3) Even if a person figured out that they can open a .c file with pretty much any text editor they would need to know how to read the text to do anything, what-so-ever with it. (ie: your typical definition of coder) 4) If/Else isn't the only conditional that could be used. Switch statements could be used as well (and probably be better suited). 5) In addition to using conditionals, one would need to know how to access the right mob, player, room or item to execute the conditional on. 6) After writing said device proc, a person needs to know how to make the command execution make an entry into the syslog so bug-hunting can occur if there's a problem. (Or if anyone tries to cheat their nuts off with said device.) 7) Since multiple game functions often rely on each other, the editor would have to take precautions so that the execution of a device didn't conflict with the execution of another proc in the game. (case in point, the renaming of certain mobs) 8) Additionally, even if a person could edit the source code, they would need to know how to compile said source code in order to make the executable that works and that we could happily play under. 9) If it was really that easy, Jedimud wouldn't have milled through so many coders over the years. -Your friendly-neighborhood Tam
