Heres a thought - have a free recall. Ok let's realistically think about this. Pros - everyone needs recalls and they are not that expensive. But really how much economy do these take out of the game? Maybe what 30k-60k per person per day, thats not alot, or even less if you group alot and have group recall or are a cleric who never buys then. Cons - may be difficult to code, players would not be "punished"(ok maybe that was a poor choice of a word) (or become more lethargic buy not haveing to actually go get something to make sure they can get home). Or maybe instead of a free recall for all just have it until say lvl 12 or 15. Gives newbies a chance to wonder and not worry about getting lost. And gives newbies a chance to get a little cash saved up to rent or buy some decent eq instead of wasting it on recalls. Discuss.......

I really like selling stuff to the wizard myself, he and the apothecary are about the only people with a steady supply of cash. That said it might be just a few k per person per day, but it is also a privledge currently for a few classes, free recalls would be essentially remove a skill from the classes that already have them.
On the second portion I think there should be free recalls for people under level 10, however it should also spam them with a warning that this skill will be removed when they reach level 10, and only be allowed from newbie zones back to their hometown. Maybe give each newbie 10 free recalls they can use before level 10 (remorts would not be given this option).

agreed maybe the complete free recall is a bit over the top but its a starting point. maybe even have free recall be a 0 remort option. with a message like farb suggested. gives newbies a place to start. i choose 12-15 as a starting level because that still gives them a decent amount of exp to run and explore and a chance to gain some gold/eq if they dont have someone powerlevel them.

The recall would be for newbies, level 1-10 from anywhere, not just hometowns. I was on a mud tonight that had that.. was very convienent for my newbie self. Did I mention how bad newbie move regen is?

The idea with recalls for newbies is because they DONT know the tricks, like short cutting through the bardic colleges.

And what about when they are not in a hometown? Or if they are in a hometown and do not know about help (areamap)? Or what if they don't have enough cash to rent enter? Your idea works for experienced players not for what I first suggested. The topics I started yesterday are to try to get pure newbies to stay once they get on. How many people are really going to want to stay in someplace they get lost, or die just walking around the home town or various other things. Yeah they may seem stupid to you being an "experienced" player but to a pure newbie these little changes could make the difference between staying or finding someplace more newbie friendly.

I'd vote for free recalls for newbies too. This would make jedimud a lot more newbie-friendly. I remember my newbie days, and being lost in midgaard. If I could make it to mid temp I'd be able to find the receptionist (until I learned of help midgaard map)
Speaking of which.. recall and identify prices are on the rise! yikes!

How about adding a recall device for newbies set that has a max level of 8? Or what ever level admins think make sense.

The few muds that I've been on have used the command: "recall" to recall a player.
