The reason I play my other characters more than my perf. warrior.
1 xp penalty doth sucketh.
2 I can run gold/eq infinately faster with my c30 and m30's with 0 remorts.
3 the reward vs pain in the but xp thing is a little outta whack, thinks me
4 above mostly only applies to non casters, as a 25 wis quake kills about anything, and a 25 str warrior is +3 dam more ooOOoo. So i am not likeing the discrepancies.
5 the clan i play in is mostly absent, since the last big downtime, and yes i too hate risking a death ona 7+ remort because of a bad cleric
6 I do less dam and need more regen time as a 7 remort warrior with pretty good eq, including bolt and all that, than most 3-5 remort clerics, with prro to midling eq.
**disclaimer** I ran my 7 remorts in a little over 7 months, so where as I may not be as fast as some of you, i do consider myself reasably capable of xping **end disclainmer**
now why I have only cryod maybe once.
1 like tanking for newbie trains, I just like it
2 Esp is my only warrior
3 It is fun to solo, and with potions I kick butt (more to eq than to cool stats, see caster complaint above)
4 I did waste the time, so I may as well enjoy the reward

Ew. No more rent slots. Having to pick and choose your equipment is part of the game. It wouldn't be any fun if everyone could rent everything. It eliminates a good part of the variability between characters of the same class, which is anathema to what we're trying to do with classes right now. (I say trying because we can't even have our meetings as long as the mud is dead! Bah!) Items were limited to +1 per stat over 18 for a reason. It most likely is not going to change. And the ra is a lot better than the teardrop, if you're not at perfect stats. HH not happening is a bug iirc. I don't remember any discussion to remove it, in any case. Anyway, yeah. And stuff. My perfect characters rot in cryo for several reasons: 1) I simply don't have a lot of time to play anymore, which ties in with.... 2) rent money, and 3) irreplaceable equipment (things like Halloween quest items, multi-colored armlet, etc) I drag out Zohra once in a blue moon when I feel like destroying sanced mobs, or Sokar when I run equipment, but that about sums it up, boys and girls. For the most part, I chalk it up to lack of time, due to work + various administrative duties. If there were more hours in the day, I'd simply have higher quotas. Pfeh. And I've lost quite enough quest-only equipment, thankyouverymuch. It was my own stupid fault, I'll at least admit that, but my cleric set has never quite been the same. Ah well, c'est la vie.

Well, Sashimi stays in cyro most of the time because I used to not want to lose his high hitpoints, but now with the 25 con possible I wonder about a few more remorts. The problem for Sashimi is his remort counter is only 3, as the remorts done before the counter went in did not count. Of course, I could "slap on" 4 more remorts and have 20% regen to spread around. It is tempting.
FishmanII started out as my holder, but when my friend Patrick came back I gave him the paladin holder with good cleric stats to remort cleric, as I had remorted the cleric "sashimi" to bard, then ranger. Between the two of us he is uber perfect, with +5 remrots on mana regen. He makes a great cleric, but an other remort would be like walking through a hip deep thick swamp. I think he is on remort counter 17 or so.
Basically, it is just more fun to experment. I myself get bored remorting the same guy again and again and so I like to change around. Even Sashimi I did not get really excited about him being "perfect" until I only had 3 to go. Of course now "perfect" is even father off as all he has now is perfect stats, true perfect would also be 18 more remorts for +6 regen points on each of the regens. But I don't think I would want to invest that much time into one class, as I can't switch like Bunny does. Bard to Ranger and back is kind of dull. Besides Debaser needs more remorts to get to perfect himself.

The day I have a perfect character, is the day I stop playing.
I really can't see myself remorting more than once. I like to play all the classes and see how far I can get without remorting. Once I max out experience, meet my gold and eq goals, I usually just cryo the character and pick a new class to play. For me, it's fun to just eq another character, and watch it grow.

The day I have a perfect character, is the day I stop playing. Ya know, I can really relate to this. Quite simply, I get bored after running the same character for a while. Not bringing out characters that are perfect (for me) has nothing to do with HH, xp, or anything game related. It simply has to do with getting bored. I'll happily admit that I have at least 30 runable characters (equipped, with decent levels and ready to play) and about 100 not equipped or low level characters that serve as either bags or exercises in getting good/bad stats. Why? Variety! Quite honestly, in any game I've ever played, I always expect the difficulty level to go up over time and it doesn't really deter me. When the xp modifier went in for remorts, I was grumpy because it was new but soon just chalked it up to another version of a difficulty level and played on. When gold increase (for sac) for every remort was in, I did the same there. Finally... (and those who were around will love this one) I was quite grumpy when the sac command went in. Why? I think it's one of the cheesiest ways to imm that I've ever seen on a mud. On some muds, you have to go on a quest (this requires real sets of gear to complete). Once you end the quest, you get your goblet of immortality, suck down the wine and become Immortal. This required some sort of skill and a true "sacrifice" instead of simply dumping off crap gear with high +'s. Even still, I played on. Hrm, seems I got sidetracked. Anyhow, the moral of the story is that I could really care less what stumbling blocks the "powers that be" put in front of my morts. The real challenge I have problems with is keeping myself from getting bored running the same character or even the same class over and over and over and over and over. -Tam

i have three characters, and evidently, the respect of farbekrieg.
throw in the occasional sapphire shield, or a purple potion, a trip to my favorite AVTR's room, a fountain when i'm thirsty, a shower when i'm tired, and a cup of black coffee with an egg, sunny side up.
add an evening cigarette after it's been raining. black and white pictures of your parents when they were still young. or barbequed chicken. a sleeping child. career success.
perfect characters aside, we can always hope that the world will offer up a little perfection. the game takes us places when the world fails us. like a good piece of non-fiction or a bad horror film. like a shakespeare quarto or a ruffini zone, we find ourselves immersed in the poetry of the commonplace, the sublime. the game mimics life and vice versa.
so if someone finds the face of god in a cleric remorted 30 times, then so be it. if someone keeps 100 characters in the deep freeze, then so be it. if someone keeps to the shire for ten years, runs the thain endlessly, then so be it.
there's plenty of room in paradise.

I completely agree. Everybody has a different style. I got +80% of my game time like Dank. Working in other windows while some semi-afk mort did 'stuff' which adds up a little bit at a time over a long peroid of time. It is just too impolite to group when I have to be AFK so much. Otherwise I like to group, being a social animal. I do like that people can make what they want out of the game. As we are about to come back, enjoy it. Make of it what you want. Just don't break "policy" and you have complete freedom within the rules.

As an aside, I won't feel I have a truly perfect character until I finally make a character with stats no higher than 10 and try to beat Fubb for "worst stats" ;D

I think that was his point. He gets bored easily, and therefore has umpteen million characters from which to pick and choose, based on however he feels he wants to play that day. Want to blow stuff up? Got a mage. Want to be atypical? Got a -damage- mage! I know he's got one perfect character out of the whole lot, and for him, it seemed like pulling teeth to run that char to perfect. Some people just don't like to play the same thing over and over and over.

I would tend to agree with Silverking, to an extent. Running a perfect character is very much a long term goal, rather than the overriding goal. Y'see, running exp is so very, very (yawns) dull for the sake of creating a perfect character. It's the journey usually, rather than the journey's end, that provides the excitement and drama (a parable). Whilst Tam and SK achieve their 'variety' through running a whole gamut of different characters, I achieve 'variety' through my idiosyncracies such as: 1. Running new classes untwinked 2. When I remort Corderlia as a 'Bard', I will reroll my final dice roll just before I imm for kicks. For me, I set myself various goals which range from short (explore x zone) to very long (perfect Bard) - which will keep me occupied for quiet some time as I only intend to run two classes ever: Bard and AntiPaladin. I like the focus of either playing one or two characters because for me, characters are an extension of one's alter ego and running multiple characters would manifest itself in personality disorders Perfect quote to end this post. Regards, Cordelia

Well the search for the perfect char, you know its kinda of a funny thing.
I think Dank hit the best. were all different people, I returned to mudding to relieve stress if you can believe that. I just don't get worried over deaths, I don't get worried over exp loss, I don't care if eq takes a long time to get (man what a switch from 1992 when equipment was my life). As for DT's yeah that would probably stress me, but then again I am so petrified of DTS that I triple check everything, but sooner or later it will happen in 12 years of mudding I have DT'd twice and that was with 3 very successful stimpy years.
You have to find out what is the best for you, I mean I will remort my cleric who knows how many times in the future, is it because I want the perfect char? Nah, I just don't want to play another class. I don't care if remort gets so bad that it takes me weeks upon weeks to remort, I just like my cleric. Yeah if it gets so bad then I will probably join the cryo bunch and start a new cleric all over again.
Anymore I have found great enjoyment in socializing with people why killing things, Tam is one of the biggest I talk to on a regular basis when on, plus a few others. Some days I get 5 or 6M in exp and level 2 or 3 times because there is no one on, another day I might not even clear 100K in exp, but I don't really care.
I think the point is to remember its a game, and if you feel like its a job to get on, level, run exp, run runt, sac, remort, then you forget a game is suppose to be FUN!.

And all of this above is why I would *love* to see new incentives put in for those old perf chars to come out of the closet and get their @$$es back in gear. Give them new goals to strive for. New challenges to overcome. Maybe a quest only for l30 perf chars... hrm... there's an idea...

When this thread was opened by me, and when i sad a 'perfect char', I simply meant one that has attained the maximum/stats equipment that you wanted and playing the character is no longer 'fun', so it might be an 'old' paladin/ranger/cleric from when stat gains were better then they are currently, or you have loaded the character with doom/quest equipment and bringing them out of cryo is a costly and painful experience requiring hours of gold running to put them back in.
In my opinion there is only one 'perfect' char that has max stats and regens, everyone else is a fraud.

I thought I had stated that fairly clearly (at least for me) as
*bold added
umm yeah it was pretty clearly labeled as
Just saying 'perfect' is very loosely defined, in that some players are more 'perfect' then others, now if only I could fine one that would die for my eeebil clerics sins.

I like the addition of the assemblies. I think to get those perfect chars in gear, there should be something along the lines of a perfect char zone where you have to run thru some trial. At the end of it is a mob that potentially could load a piece of an assembly of some kind. Let's say its not locateable but loads in a (humming) bag he always wears. They have to kill him and see if the bag has anything.
The zone could have a few different types of trials in it as well, leading to various mobs with bags.
FYI I don't know much about the DOOM zone but I've heard of a DOOM belt that has to be assembled, so this idea may have been thought of already.
I suppose you could also borrow some ideas from here or there. A new class based on "wild" spells. Wild sanc, wild heal, wild inspire, wild earthquake, wild bless, wild circle, wild enchant, wild charm, etc. Yeah I know its borrow from Infoteq again, but its a cool idea. Maybe have a wild warrior class and a wild magic-user class.
I have another idea that may seem a little strange at first but let me see if I can get it across to you. I've been playing no limit hold'em poker a lot lately (as of course many others have) and I think one of the big appeals is that you can control your risk and reward to a large degree. You could be in a tournament for a long time and then push all-in and risk everything. Or you could just risk a little of your stack but get a smaller reward.
What if MUD was like that? What if you could push "all-in" and risk everything about your character, not via DT or nuking, but in exchange for a chance at a big reward? The size of the reward would be based on the size of your stack. If you want to risk that perfect char, it could be pretty big. I guess what I'm saying is that JediMUD is more like limit hold'em - you can't control the size of your risk.
I'll refrain from giving my ideas of rewards to let your imagination run with it.
Basically, it needs to put the fear of you-know-who into things again, but its risk that the user controls.

For me, it comes down to answering the question: What is fun?
What is fun? I think what makes a game fun for most people is when they have options/choices/etc. The more, the better. When I DM my werewolf games, I always scale new roles to that ideal. Not sure how to design it? Always put the decision in the hands of the players. Let them figure it out.
For example, the remort system is vastly superior to something like Diablo 2. Why? In Diablo 2, your character development just grinds to a halt at L99. Boring. In JediMUD, you can remort. You choose what stats to increase, what class to change to, or even perhaps what regen rates to raise. Choices. That's great!
When people ask "What incentive is there to drag out my perfect char?" My answer will always be to find a way to give new choices to perfect chars. That is where I came up with the idea of going "all-in". Give them a huge risk to take for a huge reward. But its their choice of course. ;D

Perfect characters in all their many iterations already have an ungodly amount of power, and wild spells in a sense already exist in that 7x+ remorted casters get 35% bonuses to their spell damage/duration/effectiveness and the line in the sand has been drawn (at least it was non negotiable when it came exceeding that % when I asked)
Even tho warriors/ninjas/thieves do not get a higher effectiveness of their passive skills (additional multipliers to backstab, additional damage added to wk or some shot at 2x hit for thieves ninjas and 3x for warriors). Because wtn were already overpowered to begin with and casters needed to 'catch up'?
The risk reward nature of poker doesnt scale well to mudding, seeing as if the 20 remorted character wants to go all in for some overly powered special item of equivalent value to a 20x max age char, the mud will often just fold because it cannot hand out that kind of wealth and remain in business (competive business) even if it should win 2/3s of the time.
The idea of a single character being able to load best in game items is abhorant to the admin as is, and several of said mobs are duoable, increaseing the mort power even more will simply remove fun/difficulty from the game in the eyes of some admin.
So going all in requires 2 things for the game to be amusing, one an opponent with a near equal stack, and an opponent willing to play high stakes, I doubt that even under an Iron Man system where morts die permantly you could get the admin to play that game.
