From http://www.boardgamegeek.com:The city of Sanctuary, created for the best-selling Thieves' World anthology, has been hailed by many as the "meanest, seediest town in all of fantasy." The implementation here at JediMUD (by Osmium) is first rate and a must-explore zone for any Jedizen.

That's a great visualization, really fits in with the image in my mind of the JediMUD version.
I might like Sanctuary as a hometown if I remembered the sea route back to NT... I learned the foot routes from Mid to NT (and back), NT to Sanctuary by sea, and Sanctuary to Skara by land. And recall back out. Though if it was a hometown, the Metro would become an option, since those are used to connect the hometowns.

Thank you Dank, and a more than a few others, for the many fine things you've written/told me about Sanctuary and how much you enjoy the zone.
I was brand new to mudding back then. Os had just immorted for the first time, and I wanted a new challenge. As a huge fan of the anthologies, and having RPGd in the City for years, it was a logical choice for my first.
The entire zone was written in Notepad! Iirc, the world-builder was just entering Beta at that time. Oni sent me the docs, and I just went to town.
My total ignorance of the what was involved in zone building was probably the most fortuitous circumstance, as I was already over my head in the task before I realized how huge it was going to be.
Implementation was hilarious. I personally crashed the game 3 times before I realized I was the jerk causing the crashes! Buggy doors, spelling errors, an inhaled drug that ended up being the most ubiquitous water container in the game! What fun!
It was truly a labor of love, and it is very gratifying to realize my baby has withstood the test of time, and is still appreciated.
My sincere thanks to all who have welcomed me back to Jedi after my 14 year absence. See you in the Temple.

Sanctuary has always been one of my favorite zones, honestly. And once I read the books, well, I liked it even more, because it's very true to the stories. It doesn't have a lot of fancy procs and devices and whatnot, with them mostly not being around at the time -- but it doesn't need it, either! It has, indeed, withstood the test of time.

I love Sanctuary, too, and I think it's really fantastic that you're back with us after all these years, Osmium. If you'd like to add any of that bit of history to the 'help sanctuary city' file, just email us the revised entry you'd like to have used

Sanctuary rocks. I used to do gold runs there until Cogitasne 'fixed Sanctuary.' Os, if you have time, you might want to look at the various new procs available to mobs and 'update' sanctuary. I always thought it a great and complete town. I made a text map for the hometowns which did not have them. Sanctuary is not a home town so I never made a map of it, but the graphic map posted in this thread from a game works well enough. With some updated mobs (say Lythane getting the 'mage' proc, etc.) I would think we could update what it is they load.

Excellent ideas! I assure you, I included all the decent procs to which I had access at the time. Also, there is a spelling error I've wanted fixed since the beginning, but it just never happened. Simply put, Ilyena the S'danzo should be named Illyra not Ilyena!
On another note, I haven't been around the last couple days.
Frankly, embarrassment is a sucky thing.
Npthief geared me up shortly after my return, and I was doing well.
Then I "rec recall" while fighting, forgetting that is a bad thing, and ended up DTing in Corsair.
Okay, Npthief and Iolanthe loaded me up again, and while trying to find my way to MY OWN city, I hit that stupid Dragon Sea DT.
I just didn't want to face the cheers and jeers by logging back in at that time. ;-) Maybe I'll walk around naked awhile, would serve me right.
Cya Monday!
